lkuro Teshima was born to a Shinto famly in 1910. At the age of twelve he had a spiritual conversion to Christianity and received baptism at seventeen. Later he was disappointed by the dogmatic Christianity that was introduced to Japan through the Western missionary and became interested in the indigenous Japanese Christianity of the Non-Church Movement. During World War U Teshima received God's revelation concerning the reconstruction of Japan after the war. With the biblical phrase from the Book of Amos the Lord urged him to take up an effort of spreading God's words: "I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord." (Amos 8:11) However, reflecting upon his lack of theological study and background he was hesitant about making up his mind. In 1948 while Teshima was wandering in the depth of Mt. Aso in his desperate cry to God, he had an encounter with the Lord. Encouraged by this experience, Teshima finally began his independent ministry, giving up his successful business career. Two years later he wrote The Love of the Holy Spirit based on the inspiration he received in an ecstatic state of being absorbed in the Bible and prayer day and night. The Holy Spirit vividly worked with Teshima, and he became a charismatic leader. He aimed at spreading the genuine gospel that Jesus taught, and he proclaimed his religious movement the Original Gospel Movement. He died on the dawn of Christmas day in 1973. |
